What is TRiO?
The Federal TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes six outreach and support programs targeted to serve and assist low-income, first-generation college, and disabled students to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post baccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects and a dissemination partnership program to encourage the replication or adaptation of successful practices of TRIO projects at institutions and agencies that do not have TRIO grants.
What does The TRiO Program do?
Provides support to low income, *first generation students and/or students with a disability Provides students with academic and personal support to fulfill their academic and career goals Provides an individualized success plan, which may include tutoring, study skill acquisition, career planning, transfer counseling. Provides a counselor or mentor who oversees the student's progress Students are required to participate in a minimum of four contacts per semester. Offers students free cultural events
TRiO participant Check list
Apply and be accepted into an academic program at the college
Register for at least six credits
Apply for financial aid
Take the Accuplacer assessment test. (see CAPS for information)
Fill out a TRIO application
Qualify as low income,*first generation college student and/or student with a disability
Qualify as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Take the Study Behavior Inventory (SBI)
Provide TRIO with a copy of your taxes from the previous year
